Relocation of Eastview Park Community Garden to Dunsmore Park
The City of Barrie operates six community garden locations: Grzegorz “Greg” Pierzchala Park, Golden Meadow Park, Shear Park, Riverwood Park, Lampman Lane Park, and Eastview Community Park.
In 2023, Parks Planning staff initiated a project to revitalize the playground at Eastview Community Park. Planned improvements at Eastview include a new playground, pathway connections, tennis court restoration, court lighting, and a basketball half-court. Due to the scope of the improvements and the related construction, the existing community garden will be closed and permanently relocated to a new location.
Parks Planning staff developed a shortlist of potential relocation sites by auditing parkland within Ward 1 that have existing water access. The southern portion of Dunsmore Park (130 Cheltenham Road) was identified as the most suitable candidate for the garden’s relocation. The existing Eastview Park Community Garden (435 Grove Street) will be relocated to the south side of Dunsmore Park (130 Cheltenham Road).
The new location at Dunsmore Park is approximately a 15-minute walk or a three-minute drive from the former location (Eastview) and will offer:
Approximately 16 garden plots
Ample space and opportunity for expansion
Direct road and water access
On-street parking
An equipment shed
A portable restroom facility
Adjacency to an existing naturalized area (to be enhanced) and natural heritage feature (the Georgian Wetlands)
A minimum 10-m setback from existing residential properties
PROPOSED CONCEPT FOR COMMUNITY GARDEN AT DUNSMORE PARK
Earlier in 2025, the City sought community insights, experiences, and ideas to help inform the Community Garden relocation to Dunsmore Park and how to improve the City’s Community Garden Program. The public was invited to participate in an online survey for the Dunsmore Park Community Garden Project, and the City hosted an in-person community consultation pop up event.
Thank you to everyone who provided feedback.
The relocation of the community garden is proposed to take place in summer or fall 2025 and is expected to open in 2026.
